Rounding out a busy week of 3 virtual town halls, we gathered one more group on August 18, early career physiatrists. Physiatrists who are 1-5 years in practice have a unique point of view on the intense health care changes, and we wanted to hear about their experiences and the opportunities they see for the field.
More than one participant discussed a need to prove the value of PM&R through education and data. As early career physicians, they emphasized the pressure they feel to prove their value in order to build referral sources and stay valuable to hospital/system administrators as well as payers.
When asked about opportunities, new and emerging technologies such as regenerative medicine were highlighted as a way to both add value to the patient and be profitable. Participants also discussed primary care partnerships and, when polled, 100% of those on the webinar felt there was an opportunity for PM&R to align more closely with primary care.
When prioritizing stakeholder audiences for awareness regarding any new physiatric models, early career physicians’ prioritized referral sources and other specialties as their top choice.
