AAPM&R's grassroots advocacy efforts are designed to ensure that physiatrists are aware of the health care changes taking place both nationally and locally. Academy staff works with members on state-level issues important to physiatrists and their practices, including scope of practice, opioid prescribing and pain management, and reimbursement. AAPM&R aims to equip members to be active and influential in a unified movement to advocate on important health care issues.
Your Academy monitors and responds to advocacy issues that arise at an individual state level and have implications at the national level. This work is done via the State Advocacy Committee (SAC), under the Health Policy and Legislation (HPL) Committee. When state legislative or advocacy issues arise, the committee often contacts member physiatrists (including State PM&R Presidents and CAC members) in the state for insight and collaboratively implements an effective advocacy response.
