Membership Categories

As the primary membership organization representing the specialty of PM&R, the Academy provides leadership for its members.

AAPM&R has a membership of more than 10,000 who rely on the Academy for continuing medical education (CME), communication of scientific and practice management information, representation on health policy and regulatory issues affecting physiatrists and their patients, and guidance on PM&R standards and policies.

Fellow—$750

(Based on a calendar year, January–December)
Physician must acquire primary certification from the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR) or the American Osteopathic Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AOBPMR) and maintain medical licensure.

Note: This member category is eligible for complimentary Maintance of Certification resources, including SAE-Ps and PIPs.

Associate—$750

(Based on a calendar year, January–December)
Physician who has successfully completed training in an approved Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program, but is not ABPMR or AOBPMR certified.

Resident—$75

(Based on an academic year, July–June)
A Resident member must be: (i) a full time resident in an Approved Residency; or (ii) a full time resident in an Approved Residency program in a related medical specialty as part of a combined residency program; or (iii) a full time physician in an Approved Residency studying for a graduate degree related to PM&R training. For the purposes of Section A.3(ii), only residency programs accredited by the ACGME or deemed by the Academy’s Membership Committee to have training requirements equivalent to the training requirements of an ACGME accredited residency program qualify. In addition, for the purposes of Section A.3(ii), the Academy’s Membership Committee shall determine in its sole discretion whether a medical specialty constitutes a “related medical specialty.

Associate Fellow—$75

(Based on an academic year, July–June)
Full-time physician in an approved fellowship program related to PM&R training and is eligible for the discounted membership plan.

Early-Career Member—$375

(18-month membership from July–December)
An early-career member is one who is going into practice (either after residency or fellowship graduation) and is eligible for the discounted membership plan. Only current members who are renewing their membership are eligible for this member type.

Medical Student—Free; $40 subscription for PM&R, the Academy's journal

(Based on an academic year, July–June)
Full-time medical student in good standing at an accredited medical school interested in the field of PM&R.

Senior Fellow—Free; $40 subscription for PM&R, the Academy's journal

(Based on a calendar year, January–December) 
Physician who has retired from practice or other position which was the principal source of professional income, by reason of either age or permanent disability, and who has been a Fellow in good standing 15 years or more.

Part-Time Fellow—$375

(Based on a calendar year, January–December)
A part-time fellow must have been a fellow member in good standing for at least 15 years, must be at least 65 years of age, and be no longer involved in their professional activity on a full-time basis.

International—$235

(Based on a calendar year, January–December)
Physician who resides in a country other than the United States, be legally qualified to practice medicine, and have had training and experience comparable to that of a Diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Advanced Practice Provider (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner)—$195

(Based on a calendar year, January–December)
An Advanced Practice Provider must be a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner eligible for membership in his or her professional discipline’s national association. Advanced Practice Providers shall have recognized education or licensure/certification, or formal appointment relevant and customary for the professional type. Applicants must attest and provide a Fellow, Part-Time Fellow or Associate AAPM&R member's sponsor name as part of their application.

Research/Academic—$240

(Based on a calendar year, January–December)
Non-physician health care professional with a PhD and current academic appointment in a division or department that includes PM&R within an accredited North American Medical School

Honorary

(Typically based on a calendar year, January–December)
One who has performed a service in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation that has been outstanding or unique resulting in national or international recognition and who is not eligible to be a Fellow member, Associate member or Senior Fellow. Any Fellow may nominate a person deemed eligible for Honorary membership.

Inactive

(Typically based on a calendar year, January–December)
An Inactive member must be a member in good standing who is facing a period of protracted personal hardship or illness and, therefore, seeks to transfer his/her membership from active to inactive status. For the purposes of this Section A.9, the Academy’s Membership Committee shall determine in its sole discretion whether a member’s situation constitutes "protracted personal hardship or illness."
