Navigating Early-Career Decisions for Residents and New Graduates: Success in Physiatry Practice

Education

Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 11 am - 3 pm (ET)

Saturday, March 13, 2021 from 11 am - 3 pm (ET)

Participants are encouraged to attend both sessions, and our meet-and-greet happy hour on Thursday, March 4 at 8 pm (ET), to take full advantage of networking and educational opportunities during our virtual conference!

Who Should Attend?

Physiatrists-in-training (in residency or in fellowship) and newly graduated physiatrists (1-3 years post-training).

What's It About?

This unique virtual conference is intended to help physiatrists in-training and newly graduated physiatrists navigate their career paths.

Education

We’ll touch upon topics that are typically not taught in residency, including resume-building strategies, job search advice, interview techniques, contract negotiations and managing personal finances. We will also discuss fellowship and non-fellowship career options, as well as private practice, academic and non-clinical career options.

Networking

Attendees are invited to join directors and faculty for a pre-conference happy hour on Thursday, March 4 at 8 pm (ET). During this casual meet-and-greet, you'll have the chance to get to know each other while sipping on a cocktail or mocktail, depending on your preference! We'll be sending you a special recipe closer to the event. Keep an eye on your email after you register!

During the conference, participants will have more opportunities to build their professional networks. You'll be assigned Zoom* breakout rooms based on regional location, where you can create connections with faculty members in their area. Attendees who choose to submit their CVs for review will also receive feedback from different members of the faculty - it will be interesting to hear different perspectives!

Panel Q&A

At the end of each session, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions to an esteemed panel of physiatrists from different practice settings, including private practice, academics, hospital-based practice, VA, medical-legal and non-medical.

Please join AAPM&R for this special affair, intended to help you make some of the most important decisions of your career.

*To ensure all functions can be used, we recommend all registrants upgrade to the latest version of Zoom. Zoom regularly provides new versions of the Zoom desktop client and mobile app to release new features and fix bugs. You can also check which version you're currently running.

“This course will be a great learning opportunity for those transitioning into their new role as a physician. You’ll gain insights to guide you in making important career decisions, and have the chance to network with other residents, early-career physiatrists and faculty from across the country. We hope you feel empowered after attending this course – to take the next step in your PM&R career with confidence!”—Sarah K. Hwang, MD, FAAPMR

Francis Lopez, MD, MPH

"In residency, practical aspects of our specialty and medicine in general are rarely taught.  After we graduate residency, we are expected to navigate our careers with little direction.  It is my hope that attendees learn important practical pearls to help them better maneuver their careers."—Francis Lopez, MD, MPH, FAAPMR

“I thought the course was incredibly monumental to help advance my career.” – Past Attendee

“I definitely think this is a great course for the senior resident physicians and early career physicians who want a refresher in how to navigate their career or just helping senior residents understand how to plan their career in the next few years.” – Past Attendee

“I feel the early career decisions course was informative and would give all residents the basic foundation for future practice success.” – Past Attendee

“As a new attending building an outpatient general PM&R practice from the ground up, I could not have asked for a better experience.” – Past Attendee

“These are topics that are rarely covered by residency programs, so it’s a great resource for physiatrists who are early in their careers to get a 'lay of the land.'” – Past Attendee
