Wheelchairs are generally used by individuals who have conditions that do not allow them to achieve independent movement. This webinar will address compliance and documentation for coverage of standard manual wheelchairs, power mobility devices, and mobility assistance equipment. Topics to be covered include general patient coverage criteria, provider requirements, supplier requirements, and the role of non-physician providers on the rehabilitation team.

    • Patient concerns with access to appropriate Mobility Assistance Equipment
  • Provider Requirements
    • Conduct a face-to-face examination of the patient
    • Document the examination
    • Write a prescription (known as the 7-element order) for the PMD
    • The role of OT and PT in fulfilling the CMS requirements
  • Supplier Requirements
    • A written prescription (7-element order)
    • Supporting documentation of the patient’s face-to-face examination
    • A detailed product description
    • A home assessment documented in a written report
    • Proof of delivery (POD)

Speakers:

  • Peter Thomas, JD is a principal with Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville located in Washington, DC.  He has a federal legislative, regulatory and Medicare appeals practice.  He represents AAPM&R before Congress and the federal agencies.  He and his law firm have extensive experience with Medicare audits and appeals and he has personal experience with lower limb prostheses.
  • Kurtis Hoppe, MD is Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a member of the Reimbursement and Policy Review Committee and a Past President of AAPM&R.

Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
