AAPM&R Approved for Commission on Cancer Membership

Great news! Your Academy was recently approved for a membership with the Commission on Cancer (CoC). The CoC, established by the American College of Surgeons in 1922, is a consortium of more than 50 professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.

Academy member Eric Wisotzky, MD, chief of the division of rehabilitation medicine and director of the cancer rehabilitation program at MedStar National Rehabilitation Network, will serve as our liaison to the Commission. Learn more.

Young Investigators Urged to Apply for USBJI Grant Mentoring Program

The United States Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) and Bone and Joint Canada are dedicated to increasing research of musculoskeletal diseases and has developed a grant mentoring program to provide early-career investigators an opportunity to work with experienced researchers to assist them in securing funding and other survival skills required for pursuing an academic career.

The fall workshop will be held November 4-6, 2016 in Toronto, Ontario. The deadline to apply is July 15, 2016. Learn more and apply for this program.

  • Whitney Chouteau, DO, has recently joined the Medical & Surgical Clinic of Irving as its new pain management physician. Her focus will be to help patients recover after injuries, improve overall health, and reduce or eliminate pain. Congratulations, Dr. Chouteau! Read more.
  • Michele Fantasia, MD, physiatrist at Children's Specialized Hospital, discusses the recovery of now 6-year-old Jude Siperstein, who was diagnosed with transverse myelitis when he was 4. Read more.
  • Andrew Judelson, MD, director of the sports concussion clinic at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod, discusses concussions and the recovery of Nick Delande, a high school senior who suffered a concussion during a soccer game in 2015. Read more.
  • Robert Sloan, MD, FAAPMR, was recently appointed as the director of the new spine program at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis associated with the University of Minnesota Medical School. He will also be a partner in the interdisciplinary TBI program there. Dr. Sloan will be involved with clinical care, program development, research in both spine and TBI, and teaching medical students and residents. He was past president of the Hawaii Medical Association and remains assistant clinical professor at the University of Hawaii. He is founder and medical director of the Concussion Care Centers of Hawaii and founding board member of the State DOH Traumatic Brain Injury Advisory Board. Congratulations, Dr. Sloan!
