| New Patient Safety Notice—Banned Devices: Powdered Surgeon's Gloves, Powdered Patient Examination Gloves, and Absorbable Powder for Lubricating a Surgeon's Glove | | The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or Agency) has determined that powdered surgeon's gloves, powdered patient examination gloves, and absorbable powder for lubricating a surgeon's glove presents an unreasonable and substantial risk of illness or injury and that the risk cannot be corrected or eliminated by labeling or a change in labeling. Consequently, FDA is banning these devices. Learn more. | |
| DEA Announces Significant Changes to Registration Renewal Process Effective January 1, 2017 | | The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently announced significant changes to its registration renewal process. Effective January 1, 2017, the DEA is eliminating the informal grace period previously granted to registrants renewing their registrations. Learn more. | |
| Post-Acute Care Value-Based Purchasing Legislation Tabled | | Post-Acute Care (PAC) Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) legislation has been tabled for this Congressional session. It does not mean however that legislative initiatives and regulatory efforts to update and reform PAC VBP will not be reintroduced for future consideration. It is very likely that PAC VBP legislation will be re-introduced in the new Congress, and CMS will continue to review and potentially propose regulatory updates and changes to PAC payments. Your Academy is very engaged in this bill and has even testified before the House Ways & Means Committee on the legislation. We'll continue working closely with the Post-Acute Care Work Group (a group of PAC stakeholders), engaging in Congressional and committee visits, and representing the specialty in post-acute care. We will be following developments and providing timely updates. | |

| | The Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program (RMSTP) provides research training, mentorship, and career development support for those physiatrists committed to developing productive careers in academic medicine and research. The ultimate aim of the RMSTP is to increase the number of rigorously-trained, extramurally-competitive, and scientifically-productive faculty members in physical medicine and rehabilitation departments, who can contribute to the continued development of physiatric research specifically and rehabilitation science in general. - Sunil Kothari, MD, medical director of the Disorders of Consciousness Program at TIRR Memorial Hermann and assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine, is helping East Baton Rouge Deputy Nick Tullier recover from life-threatening gunshot wounds to the head, abdomen, and shoulder. Tullier was 1 of 6 Baton Rouge police officers shot during a July 17 ambush attack that left 3 dead and 3 critically injured. Read more.
