DEA Releases Medication Access and Training Expansion Act Training Requirements

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) recently released guidance on the training requirements for the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. Section 1263 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, known as the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, requires new or renewing DEA registrants, as of June 27, 2023, to have completed a total of at least 8 hours of training on opioid or other substance use disorders. The requirements are outlined here.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released recommendations for curricular elements in substance use disorders training, which can be found here.

Legislation Introduced to Alleviate Impact of Conversion Factor Cut for 2021

Last month, two bills were introduced in the House proposing solutions to the estimated 10.6% Physician Fee Schedule conversion factor cut expected to go into effect January 1, 2021.  The bills offer some relief to the cut, but do not reflect a comprehensive or long-term solution.  AAPM&R has therefore chosen to remain neutral regarding these bills. 

Your Academy continues to advocate for a permanent solution to the conversion factor cut while maintaining the important payment increases to office and outpatient evaluation and management services.
