The current opioid crisis and pandemic are two intersecting challenges of opioid management. Physiatrists are at the forefront of treating acute and chronic pain conditions and are frequently asked to manage pain as a method of improving function. Given the current environment and the fluctuating ability to see patients, this pre-Assembly session assists practicing physiatrists in the management of opioid therapy during a pandemic. It is intended to be a real world, clinically applicable course that will include didactic presentations, interactive polling, and time for participants to ask questions. Participants will leave the pre-Assembly session feeling better informed about how to prescribe opioids safely and in accordance with regulations.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Implement practical techniques for managing patients using safe prescription of opioids
  • Employ risk stratification tools for patients regarding their potential for opioid abuse, misuse, and addiction
  • Define and recall federal laws and regulations pertaining to controlled substance prescribing
  • Apply telemedicine as allowed to prescribe and monitor opioids

Who Should Attend:

This course is designed for physiatrists* who treat patients with pain in the inpatient and outpatient settings, including both opioid and non-opioid strategies.

*While the course is designed for physiatrists, any physicians or advanced practice providers are welcome to attend.
